Mixed-SKU auto parts: when a small import order pays

Last updated

Published by 1688 Auto Parts · Review method

Key takeaways

  • Compare cash to meet the same immediate demand, including pack rounding and verification.
  • In the illustrative basket, local purchase is USD 276, combined import USD 391 and separate imports USD 420.
  • All prices and freight/tax allowances are assumptions; replace them with written quotes and do not credit unproven surplus demand.

For a workshop buying several small part lines, compare the cash needed to fill the same immediate demand. A low piece price can be outweighed by pack rounding, multiple fitment checks and transport charges.

The worked basket below is illustrative arithmetic prepared on 2 October 2026, not a supplier quote, customer shipment or forecast of savings. Replace every price and charge with current, same-specification quotes before deciding.

Goods cost: quote the pack multiple
  1. Cabin filters A

need 12; assumed import pack of 10 at USD 3 each means buying 20 for USD 60. Local exact quantity: 12 × USD 8 = USD 96.

  2. Air filters B

need 8; assumed import pack of 5 at USD 5 each means buying 10 for USD 50. Local exact quantity: 8 × USD 12 = USD 96.

  3. Wiper pairs C

need 4; assumed import pack of 2 pairs at USD 6 per pair means buying 4 pairs for USD 24. Local exact quantity: 4 × USD 18 = USD 72.

  4. Import goods subtotal

USD 134 for 34 sellable units (a wiper pair counts as one unit here). Local goods subtotal: USD 264 for the 24 units needed now. The import has ten surplus filters.

Define the basket and its limits

Assume a UK workshop needs 12 cabin filters for application A, eight engine air filters for application B and four wiper pairs for application C. Letters A–C are placeholders for separately verified catalog applications, not universal part sizes. This example excludes braking, steering, restraints, fluids and batteries.

All amounts are USD for comparison, with exchange conversion assumed already included. Illustrative local prices and import allowances are non-recoverable cash amounts. The USD 55 import duty/tax allowance is only a scenario input, not a UK rate or a calculated tax assessment. No recoverable VAT is assumed. Other businesses must use the same tax treatment on both sides.

Goods cost: quote the pack multiple

  • Air filters B: need 8; assumed import pack of 5 at USD 5 each means buying 10 for USD 50. Local exact quantity: 8 × USD 12 = USD 96.
  • Wiper pairs C: need 4; assumed import pack of 2 pairs at USD 6 per pair means buying 4 pairs for USD 24. Local exact quantity: 4 × USD 18 = USD 72.

Compare three complete cash totals

  • Local exact-quantity purchase: goods USD 264 + delivery USD 12 = USD 276.
  • Separate imports of the same rounded basket: goods 134 + domestic transport 24 + sourcing/fitment/sample-review allowance 45 + inspection 20 + packing 12 + international transport 105 + duty/tax allowance 55 + clearance/final-delivery allowance 25 = USD 420.
  • Combined import of the same rounded basket: goods 134 + domestic transport 24 + sourcing/fitment/sample-review allowance 45 + inspection 20 + repacking 18 + international transport 70 + duty/tax allowance 55 + clearance/final-delivery allowance 25 = USD 391.
  • Under these assumptions, consolidation reduces the separate-import cash total by USD 29, but still costs USD 115 more than buying the required quantities locally. This is a worked comparison, not a promised discount.

Make the freight allowance testable

The example assumes dry, compatible parts from three suppliers, no oversize item and one accepted combined route to the workshop postcode. The USD 70 and USD 105 figures are invented placeholders; no measured carton or carrier booking supports them.

Request outer dimensions, gross weights and a packing plan for both options. The applicable carrier’s chargeable-weight rule, carton rounding and protection needs decide whether the assumed reduction is plausible. Do not crush filter media or wiper packaging to meet an assumed box size.

Value surplus and fitment risk separately

The ten extra filters tie up USD 34 at their assumed purchase cost: eight cabin filters × USD 3 plus two air filters × USD 5. Their future value depends on demand for applications A and B, storage and specification stability. The worksheet assigns no resale proceeds or savings to them.

The USD 45 review allowance must be replaced with a defined scope: catalog checks per application, current-stock photos, agreed interface measurements and any sample/postage work actually needed. It is not a certificate, durability test or guarantee that the order will fit.

If two ordered wiper pairs were unusable, emergency local replacement at the assumed USD 18 per pair plus USD 12 delivery would add USD 48. This is a sensitivity calculation only; it does not predict a failure probability. Keep unquantified rework and downtime outside the total and state them openly.

Choose the order that fits demand

  • Buy locally when the repair date is near, compatibility is unresolved or the current basket cannot absorb verification and freight overhead.
  • Consider a combined import when repeat demand, fitment evidence and written route quotes support it. Recalculate each replenishment; do not simply multiply this small-order result.
  • Try smaller pack quantities or a slightly higher exact-quantity quote before increasing inventory.
  • Keep urgent or restricted items separate when their delay and handling cost would affect the ordinary replenishment basket.

Prepare a quote-ready replenishment sheet

For each line record OE/application evidence, vehicle/build boundary, specification, quantity needed now, allowable surplus, pack size, sample status and required arrival date. Add destination postcode, tax treatment and delivery access.

Use the sourcing form to request exact-quantity and pack-rounded alternatives. Use the landed-cost calculator for a first comparison, then replace its estimates with written supplier, carrier and broker figures. Neither a smaller carton nor a lower piece price should override product suitability.

Questions & answers

Common questions

Is a combined order always cheaper?
No. In this scenario it is cheaper than three separate imports, but the exact-quantity local purchase has the lowest immediate cash cost.
Should I spread fitment costs over future orders?
You can show a repeat-order scenario separately if the specification and supplier remain valid. Do not erase the first-order cost or assume future sales.
Can the same worksheet compare brake or steering parts?
The cost structure can be reused, but mandatory compliance and application-specific safety evidence must be satisfied first. A cheaper basket cannot replace those checks.
